Ionizers
create ions which are natural particles in the air that have either
a positive or negative charge of electricity.
The charged particles are formed when enough energy acts upon
a molecule to eject an electron. Negative ions collide with airborne
particles such as dust, pollen, bacteria, dander and smoke. The
negative ion transfers its charge to the polluting particle creating
a new negatively charged particle, which continues to attract
positive particles until the particles become heavy enough to
fall out of the air we breathe.
Maintaining a natural balance of ions is one of Mother Natures
principal ways of keeping the air clean outdoors in natural environments.
Indoors, this natural balance is missing and air ionizers are
required.
In nature, ions are generated in abundance in many ways.
- Ultra-violet light from the sun
- Lightning and thunderstorms
- Friction within wind and rain
- Splitting of water into droplets by waterfalls and surf
- Natural radiation in rocks and soil
- Plants giving off negatively charged oxygen
Places we find refreshing such as in the mountains, near waterfalls and
seashores -
where health resorts are traditionally situated - are found to have high
concentrations
of negative ions.
The normal negative ion count in fresh country air is 2,000 -
4,000 per cubic centimeter. The negative ion count at Yosemite
Falls is over 100,000 per cubic centimeter. The negative ion
count in a normal home or office is less than 100 per cubic centimeter!
As well as cleaning the air, it has been found ionization has
many other profound effects. Hundreds of papers dating back to
the 1800's have been published on the positive effects of negative
ions. Most of the research indicates the following benefits of
negative ions:
- Increased Alertness
- Better Sleep
- Reduction of Allergies
- Reduced Depression
- Mood Elevation
- Increase in Vitality
One
simple explanation to these claims may be due to the fact our
indoor environments are for the most part lacking in negative
ions. Electrical appliances and air movement through heating
and ventilation ductwork produces a preponderance of positive
ions. Positive ion environments can make us feel uncomfortable,
irritable and have been associated with headaches, fatigue,
depression and restless sleep. Indoor air ionizers can help
restore the natural balance of ions found outdoors.
One interesting study indicated increased negative ion counts
had a strong positive effect on 25% of the test subjects, a
noticeable positive effect on 50% of the test subjects, and
no effect on 25% of the test subjects.
The following is an excerpt from "Whole Self" magazine,
Spring 1991 edition.
"Research on ions began in the 1950s with Dr. Albert Kreuger,
professor emeritus of the University of California at Berkeley,
and Dr. Felix Sulman, professor of pharmacology at the Hebrew
University in Israel."
"Dr. Kreuger excited the scientific world when he discovered
ions to be biologically active, stimulated production of the
powerful chemical serotonin, 5-HT. Serotonin is a very active
neuro-hormone which causes profound neural, glandular, and digestive
effects throughout the body."
"Dr. Sulman corroborated Kreuger's findings while studying
positive ion victims of the hot, dry Sharav winds in Jerusalem.
He demonstrated three effects of positive ion excess: irritation
and tension, exhaustion, and hyperthyroid response. Most of
these conditions, along with symptoms of depression, anxiety,
headaches, and low-energy physical and mental functions, were
shown to be alleviated or totally eliminated by increasing the
negative ion count in the air."
"While ionization of the air is mandatory in many European
and Russian hospitals and workplaces, it has only recently come
to light in our country with the growing problem of toxic air
in our urban environments."
Our whole home air ionizers
use a technology that is proprietary and unique to all other
technologies available today. The ionizer section of the ionic
air purifier emits a frequency that releases ionic energy into
the air as it travels to all parts of a home within a 60 foot
radius; on the other side of walls, floors and ceilings.
The ionizer continually maintains 4,000 negative and
3,000 positive ions per cubic centimeter within this area. This
breakthrough technology provides the means to clean the air
in an entire building. It also eliminates the need to use large
fans to propel ions from the ionizer. All other ionizers are
effective in only a single room.
